cat travelled to inner finnmark, nestled against the finnish boarder, norway's 'big sky country' one of the last great, undisturbed wilderness areas in northern europe, a land of reindeers and their herdsmen.
the sami, an indigenous people of the arctic, have an ability to listen to the voice of nature and adapt to its demands. their culture has been shaped by a landscape of the arctic ocean, the fjords and the tundra. sápmi is a vast land which encompasses parts of norway, sweden, finland and the kola peninsula of russia.
the sami of norway, roam the finnmark plateau, they live a nomadic subsistence, around the 'lávvu', moving their herds of reindeers across the region, with the seasons.
norway's Lapland is a place rich in myth and magic, it is one of the purest places on earth... with the most incredibly light.
as well as documenting the ways of the sami, cat's photographs, from norway's remote tundra, present her own interventions into the natural landscape. a staged and idealised representation of the indigenous peoples of lapland. a beautiful young women, in london's spring/summer couture fashion, carefully mixed with the sami's traditional dress, presents a romanticised view of what occurs within this natural and sublime environment in temperatures of -15 or below.
'the judges were drawn to her clean, crisp imagery. the first portfolio, shot in norway, brings a fashion feel to the travel theme and is beautiful in its simplicity'
